Rideau River Camping Adventure (as told by Laney)

 Published in

This weekend we went camping and had lots of fun. We weren't near home and I kept hearing people say "Rideau River" so maybe we went there.

We had lots of adventures, and best of all, we left that bad kitty Tashi at home! She is way too bad to take camping, so she had to stay by herself and watch the house. She doesn't do as good a job as me, but she did ok.

When we got there to the camping site, there was a big dog that I met. It was the size of a horse! He seemed nice, but I didn't like him around so I barked at him every chance I got. I told him who's boss!

Then I ran around and checked the perimeter of the camp area. It was good, except for that dog. Other people showed up and loved on me, so I was pretty happy. Oh yah, and we ate and I got to sneak what people were dropping. I almost got a whole hamburger when they weren't looking, but my mommy saw me.

The Alkaline Diet

 Published in

Mark and I were first introduced to the Alkaline Diet of all places but on our Carribean Cruise. We have since sworn this is the best and healthiest way to live life and have never looked or felt better in our lives. Check it out!

What is an alkaline diet?
An alkaline diet is a diet that emphasizes, to a varying degree, fresh fruit, vegetables, roots, nuts, and legumes. It does not completely replace other foods, but switches the balance to 80/20 alkaline foods to the Western diet stuff.

paso doble burritos | Ottawa Tulip Festival May 2-19

Less than a week from now, our delicious burritos will be had by thousands of lucky, hungry Tulip festival goers!

paso doble burritos will be featured at the Canadian Tulip Festival May 2-19! The festival averages thousands of people daily, and on average 20,000 on weekends!

Mark and I are busy with the final details to prepare for opening day this Friday, May 2. He'll have a kitchen staff to manage in an official tent near the main food pavilion at Dow's Lake.

paso doble burritos will feature chicken, pork and veggie burritos with tortilla chips and salsa.

GO! Mark's ancient Chinese skills

 Published in

Last week, in our attempts to deal with the Winter doldrums, we walked (in the sludge and freezing rain) to Rideau Centre and did a little shopping. I had completely forgotten that there is a game store on the first level, near the food court.

We went in looking for something new or old, but something that would be totally different than playing Scrabble, Cranium or Canasta - our three favs. I spotted Go! I knew about this game from my boss in Portland, and know a few people who absolutely love it - kinda like playing chess.

Mark and I have played a total of 3 times, and our running score is Mark 3, Jessica 0! I couldn't believe this! We're both so competitive with each other, so we really duke it out when we play board games. But it's a lot of fun, and like an Othello meets Risk kinda game of territory and freedom.

Laney's going to be OK!

 Published in

Laney's regular doctor diagnosed her as having only a *stretched* ACL. Several weeks have passed and she's putting more weight on the wounded leg. If it were torn, she would not put any weight on it at all. She seems happier, and is running around like her old self.

The doctor has her on pain medication daily, and we're still limiting the amount of human and kitty interaction she has to help her rest.

One positive side to all this is that we're training her not to jump up. It's working. So after all these years, Laney is getting more obedient. It's only been 10 years in the making, as she just celebrated her birthday this month. Happy Birthday Laneybeda!

Yin Yoga

 Published in

In Portland, I had been introduced to a few types of Yoga - Hot, Ashtanga and a very powerful one called Yin Yoga.

Yin Yoga is an asana practice, and counterbalances the body from the more common Yang yoga practices. These poses target the deep tissue between the muscles rather than the muscles themselves. For me, it allows me to focus on greater flexibility and opening up areas that typically store the body's tension - in women, the hips and in men, the shoulders.

80 Frank is now on Bullfrog Power!

 Published in

On January 3, 2008, we switched our home energy usage to Bullfrog Power! That means that we draw our energy from the Ontario grid's Bullfrog's green power. Our power costs now are supporting clean, renewable power instead of polluting and carbon-intensive sources like coal.

Support from customers like us is helping to bring more new renewable power online with the use of wind turbines here in Canada. To learn more, see Bullfrog and Flick Off: http://www.bullfrogpower.com and http://www.flickoff.org

Laney has a torn ACL!

 Published in

My little dog Laney has a confirmed torn tendon in her knee. She injured herself jumping and landing poorly on the slippery hard wood floors over a week ago.

The doctor says she needs knee surgery to repair her little back leg. As she turns 10 this year, I think it's best that we go forward with the surgery. She's just not herself, and she stresses me out trying to jump and run to chase Natasha.

We'll schedule her surgery in early January. She's currently resting in her crate (doggie version of bed rest), and missing chasing squirrels.

I want to go back to Disneyland!

 Published in

Disneyland was so much fun! We were there for three days, and I don't think that was enough. Mark and I toured California Adventure park on Day 1, then Disneyland for two full days.

My favorite part was that everyone there is so happy. The rides were amazing - even the kid ones for Pinochio, Pirates of the Carribean, Peter Pan and others. The look on Mark's face when I was experiencing these rides for the first time was really funny. He was just so happy to be there!

It's a Small World was funny because they even had a Canadian Mountie in it! It was so elaborate to see all of the dancing dolls. We also went on Dumbo, the huge pirate ship, the Haunted Mansion, Alice in Wonderland, and Big Thunder Mountain.

This year is going so fast!

 Published in

I can't believe it's almost June! Mark and I are still enjoying the fact that we are newlyweds in a "new" home! We're having a blast and are still busy as ever. For some reason, work never slows down!

Each weekend, we're starting to resemble ordinary people by going to places other than Home Depot. This weekend, we went to see the Electric Vehicle Show in Ottawa (very very cool) and worked on the house by cleaning up the backyard to get ready for some landscaping. We're planning to build our own deck for the back and really spend a lot of time enjoying our new view.

Next weekend, we're off to Seattle for Maria's graduation.
