Long time in the making - my first book

 Published in

In college, I had this idea for a lifestyle guide. I always thought it would end up being about relationships or success. In many ways, that's where my ambitions and dreams were at that time.

Long since, I've considered the same idea but to a broader audience - people who I think are similar minded in their approach to life. Maybe they have the same passions as me, or maybe they run into the same hurdles as reoccurring themes in their lives?

This book, which I'm crafting on this blog site, is the working rendition of these ideas. Feedback welcome.

Rideau River Camping Adventure (as told by Laney)

 Published in

This weekend we went camping and had lots of fun. We weren't near home and I kept hearing people say "Rideau River" so maybe we went there.

We had lots of adventures, and best of all, we left that bad kitty Tashi at home! She is way too bad to take camping, so she had to stay by herself and watch the house. She doesn't do as good a job as me, but she did ok.

When we got there to the camping site, there was a big dog that I met. It was the size of a horse! He seemed nice, but I didn't like him around so I barked at him every chance I got. I told him who's boss!

Then I ran around and checked the perimeter of the camp area. It was good, except for that dog. Other people showed up and loved on me, so I was pretty happy. Oh yah, and we ate and I got to sneak what people were dropping. I almost got a whole hamburger when they weren't looking, but my mommy saw me.

The Alkaline Diet

 Published in

Mark and I were first introduced to the Alkaline Diet of all places but on our Carribean Cruise. We have since sworn this is the best and healthiest way to live life and have never looked or felt better in our lives. Check it out!

What is an alkaline diet?
An alkaline diet is a diet that emphasizes, to a varying degree, fresh fruit, vegetables, roots, nuts, and legumes. It does not completely replace other foods, but switches the balance to 80/20 alkaline foods to the Western diet stuff.

GO! Mark's ancient Chinese skills

 Published in

Last week, in our attempts to deal with the Winter doldrums, we walked (in the sludge and freezing rain) to Rideau Centre and did a little shopping. I had completely forgotten that there is a game store on the first level, near the food court.

We went in looking for something new or old, but something that would be totally different than playing Scrabble, Cranium or Canasta - our three favs. I spotted Go! I knew about this game from my boss in Portland, and know a few people who absolutely love it - kinda like playing chess.

Mark and I have played a total of 3 times, and our running score is Mark 3, Jessica 0! I couldn't believe this! We're both so competitive with each other, so we really duke it out when we play board games. But it's a lot of fun, and like an Othello meets Risk kinda game of territory and freedom.

Cruising the Caribbean

2008 Caribbean Cruise

We're back from our Caribbean cruise on Royal Caribbean's Adventure of the Seas. We had a great time! It was so nice to be down in a warm climate away from work and away from the snow. Us and 3600 other like-minded people had a lot of fun on our Southern Caribbean itinerary. We departed San Juan, Puerto Rico, and went to Aruba, Curacao, St. Maarten, and St. Thomas.

We've posted our pictures of the cruise so you can check them out! I know that we'll periodically go back and look at the pictures to pretend we're on vacation again.

Laney's going to be OK!

 Published in

Laney's regular doctor diagnosed her as having only a *stretched* ACL. Several weeks have passed and she's putting more weight on the wounded leg. If it were torn, she would not put any weight on it at all. She seems happier, and is running around like her old self.

The doctor has her on pain medication daily, and we're still limiting the amount of human and kitty interaction she has to help her rest.

One positive side to all this is that we're training her not to jump up. It's working. So after all these years, Laney is getting more obedient. It's only been 10 years in the making, as she just celebrated her birthday this month. Happy Birthday Laneybeda!

Project Better Place

 Published in

For those of you that know me well, you know that lately I've been very interested in our environment. One of the things that I've been especially passionate about lately is electric cars. In my mind, they are definitely where the future is. With the latest advancements in battery technology, they can be built to go as fast and as far as a gasoline car. You no longer have to compromise performance for the environment.

There has been one area that electric cars still have issues with -- the cross country road trip. Even the most sophisticated electric cars have a range of only 250 miles. That is where Project Better Place comes in. The wonderful YouTube video below (you may need to read the full blog entry to see it embedded at manca's cafe) does a great job of explaining their battery exchange concept.

Manca family Christmas, Ottawa 2007

 Published in

I really can't believe how fast time goes by. Christmas 2007 has already come and gone. It was quite a Christmas to remember!! Jessica and I had the privilege of hosting my entire family here in our new house. In freezing cold Ottawa.

It was the first time we'd had a house full of people. We gleefully found that it is very possible to have six adults in the house without stepping on each others toes (well not too much stepping anyway). We each had our moments of frustration. But they were just that -- moments.

I do miss my family. While I do very much like being in Ottawa, sometimes it is hard to be so far away. It was funny that we slipped right back in to our old roles. I want things to be just so. Padre goes out in the morning for his exercise and his coffee. Marpoo is loud -- and now, Jessica helps!

80 Frank is now on Bullfrog Power!

 Published in

On January 3, 2008, we switched our home energy usage to Bullfrog Power! That means that we draw our energy from the Ontario grid's Bullfrog's green power. Our power costs now are supporting clean, renewable power instead of polluting and carbon-intensive sources like coal.

Support from customers like us is helping to bring more new renewable power online with the use of wind turbines here in Canada. To learn more, see Bullfrog and Flick Off: http://www.bullfrogpower.com and http://www.flickoff.org
